The creation of Centrais Elétricas Brasileiras (Eletrobras) was proposed in 1954 by President Getúlio Vargas. The Bill faced opposition and was only passed after seven years in the National Congress. The company officially started on June 11, 1962, in a meeting held at the national Council of Waters and Electric Power (Cnaee), at the Laranjeiras Palace, in Rio de Janeiro, with the presence of President João Goulart .
Eletrobras is a mixed economy and open capital stock corporation, with shares traded at São Paulo (Bovespa), Madrid and New York Stock Exchange. Federal government holds 54.46% of the ordinary shares of the company and, thus, it is the majority stockholder.
In the capacity of holding, Eletrobras controls great part of the electric power generation and transmission systems of Brazil through six subsidiaries: Eletrobras Chesf, Eletrobras Furnas, Eletrobras Eletrosul, Eletrobras Eletronorte, Eletrobras CGTEE and Eletrobras Eletronuclear. In addition to being the principal stockholder of those companies, Eletrobras, in the name of the Brazilian federal government, holds 50% of the capital of Itaipu Binacional.
